Horse of the Week, Course of the Week

This week’s German stallion is known as one of the most intelligent horses in history, able to read and do math.

Horse of the Week: Muhamed

Muhamed was a German horse in the early 1900s known for his incredible ability to communicate, read, and even do complicated arithmetics. The man who raised him claimed Muhamed would even tattle on other horses for being lazy. Sadly, Muhamed disappeared when he served as a draft animal in World War I.

July 4th HorseLibs - Contest Results!

Hey CourseHorsers! Thanks to everyone who participated in our July 4th HorseLibs contest and gave us a good laugh. We had a great time reading all of the entries - it was tough choosing only three winners. A big congratulations to Gracie Raver, Hannah Sterngast, and David Friedman, who each received a $100 CourseHorse gift card. Here is a compilation of their three entries:

The Star Spangled Banner, HorseLibs Allstars Edition:

Oh, say can you ruff ruff by the dawn’s early light,

What so gaily we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad eyelashes and bright pants thru the perilous fight,

O’er the Kathie Lee and Hoda we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the giraffe’s red glare, guavas bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our hipster-y microbrew was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the steak and the home of the gluten-free?

Horse of the Week, Course of the Week

This week’s trusty steed, or should I say mare, is a true American heroine who braved the midnight ride with Paul Revere.

Horse of the Week: Brown Beauty

paul-revere-by-nc-wyeth.jpg

On April 18th 1775, Brown Beauty helped Paul Revere on his famous ride. Though, it’s likely Brown Beauty didn’t actually belong to Paul Revere. She was borrowed from the Charlestown merchant John Larkin that night. Sadly, the British confiscated Brown Beauty after her act of American patriotism.

5 Tips to Master the Grill

Getting ready to whip out the grill this July 4th? Check out these 5 master grilling tips to ensure you’re making the most delicious franks and burgers ever. Happy Fourth!

image

Brought to you by James Briscione, Director of Culinary Development at the Institute of Culinary Education

1. Start Clean.

Always start with a clean, hot grill. Allow your grill to preheat before adding anything to start cooking. Depending on your grill, it will need to preheat for 10-20 minutes. Gas grills will be ready more quickly than charcoal. Once heated, wipe down the grates with a kitchen towel dipped in canola or vegetable oil.

2. Season Early.

Especially on cuts of meat, you want to season with salt 30 minutes before putting it on the grill. This allows the salt to penetrate the meat for flavor, as well as dry the surface, which allows for better browning.

3. Make it Dry.

Always pat dry your meat before putting it on the grill, even if it’s been in a wet marinade. The wetness will make the items stick to the grill.

image

4. Grill Marks.

Adding those beautiful grill marks takes your grill out to the next level. It’s easy! Just make sure to only move your meat once to achieve the look. Use your tongs or spatula to measure – lay them parallel to the grates, then rotate them 90 degrees. You want to rotate the meat just less than 90 degrees for the perfect marks.

 5. Let it Rest.

Once finished, always put your meat on a resting rack – the same one you’d use to cool your cookies. You want to allow it to rest to allow it to keep all its juices. The general rule of thumb is to have it rest ½ the amount of time it was cooking, but about 5 minutes is also adequate and will do the trick.

Introducing…

Horse(s) of the Week: The Wild Horses of Corolla, NC

This horse family is one of many that roam wild and free on the beaches north of Corolla, NC. These Spanish mustangs have been living near the beach for hundreds of years, and are proven to be descendants of the mustangs brought to the New World by colonists back in the 1500s. Cool!

Why Every New Yorker Should Learn a New Language

It’s never too late to start learning a new language. According to a recent study, learning a second language may help improve brain function, regardless of your age.

Fluent City, one of our language schools, offers effective language classes that not only immerse you in word and culture, but also introduce you to new friends.

image

Through four years of high school French classes, countless hours of French study in college, and many trips immersed abroad in Paris, Fluent City owner Sam Maher fell in love with French language and culture and began giving lessons to friends and neighbors from his living room. While he had no formal teaching experience, Sam had incredible teaching instincts, and his fast-growing number of students required him to relocate and hire more teachers.

image

In three short years, the program has grown into Fluent City: a national company that offers ten languages with classes in eight cities. Fluent City continues to hire teachers with the idea that an engaging teacher with great teaching instincts is better than a teacher with a formal training but no spark in the classroom.

image

Why take a language class?

While many students take language classes to be exposed to different cultures, Fluent City students also see classes as spaces to meet new friends. “We’ve found that our students find value not only in learning a new language, but also in the atmosphere of the classes themselves. Our students get to meet other curious, dynamic people from their city with each class,” says Mandy Menaker, marketing director at Fluent City.

image

“In a culture where people who live in big cities have to be dependent on bars and barbeques to meet new friends, Fluent City provides a new way to meet like-minded acquaintances while also learning another language. Our classes have resulted in roommates, bandmates, relationships and even marriages!”

image

Fluent City in Five Years

In the next five years, Fluent City plans to continue to diversify their offerings through adding more classes to accommodate different schedules, expanding to more cities, and adding new languages. They also plan to add to their existing list of complimentary products to help students study outside of class and put their language skills to use, including language-themed events, extra practice sessions, and international language trips.

"The slightly longer term plan involves international branches. It won’t be long before Parisians, Londoners and Berliners can learn a foreign language with Fluent City!”
